Valley Town Toastmasters 2022-2023 Club Speech Contest

Eligibility - All Contests

  • Must be a paid-up club member in good standing
  • Members of multiple clubs can compete in every club they are a paid member; but can compete in only 1 Area speech contest of any type
  • Cannot compete if a contest chair, chief judge, voting judge, tiebreaking judge, timer, counter or sergeants at arms in the contest at which they are serving in any of these roles

Eligibility - International Speaking Contest

In addition to above

  • Have earned Level 1 and Level 2 certificates for any one Path in Pathways

Application Forms

Regardless of how you add your name to a contest, you need to complete a TM (1) Speaker's Certification fo Eligibility and Originality form and a (2) Speech Contestant Profile form. This can be done at any time up to the day of the contest (although early completions are appreciated). A Speech Title is only required if participating in the International Speech Contest.

Contest Toastmaster

  • Plays the usual role of Toastmaster - introduces speakers prior to speaking.

Chief Judge

  • Co-ordinates other judges
  • Selects the tiebreaking judge in secret (Chief Judge is the only individual with knowledge of tiebreaking judge's identity)
  • Appoints Timer 1 and Timer 2
  • Records the contest winner
  • Responsible for destroying all ballots, time records and tally sheets after winners have been announce

Voting Judge

  • At least 5 Voting Judges are required per contest
  • Judge contestants by completing standard ballots

Tiebreaking Judge

  • Identity is kept secret from all but Chief Judge
  • Ballot is counted only if a tie needs to be broken

  • 2 required - Timer 1 and Timer 2
  • Timer 1 - Records the official speech time
  • Timer 2 - Operates the timing device to signal elapsed time (5, 6 and 7 minute marks)
  • Appointed by Chief Judge


  • Tabulate the ballots received from all judges
