The Toastmasters Mission
A statement of shared values

Every Toastmasters club shares the same mission, clearly defined in the following mission statement:

We provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.

Through this mission, each Toastmaster gains a clear understanding of the club's purpose, and the organization as a whole benefits from a shared set of values and goals.

Everyone in a Toastmasters meeting was once at the level you are now. The environment is friendly and supportive, and the self-paced programme allows you to build confidence with each speaking assignment.

  • A typical club has between 20 to 40 members who meet either weekly, biweekly or monthly. An evening meeting normally lasts around 90- 120 minutes.
  • There is no instructor in a Toastmasters meeting. Instead, members evaluate one another’s presentations, pointing out the strengths and suggesting improvements. This feedback process is a key part of the program’s success. Members also give impromptu talks on assigned topics, conduct meetings and develop their leadership skills.
  • We learn through the Toastmasters Pathways learning experience, an exciting, flexible and interactive way to develop your skills and help others in your club develop theirs. Pathways helps you learn communication and leadership skills that you need to succeed. It gives you:

    • The opportunity to build  up to 300 unique competencies
    • 10 specialized learning paths to choose from
    • Online content, so that you can learn anytime, anywhere
    • Real-world, transferable skills

One thing that you'll love at Toastmasters meetings is the applause. At first you'll be applauded for your effort; later you'll be applauded for your skill.

How to Learn and Have Fun

If you haven't attended a Valley Easy Speakers meeting yet, it's time you did! Every meeting is packed with fun and learning. Even when you're nervously practicing that new skill, you know you have a safe environment to try new things, make mistakes, and best of all, get better!

Everyone here started at the beginning, and we all know what it feels like to attempt something new that may even be a bit scary. We are here to help each other succeed in a fun, friendly atmosphere. And we take our successes into the real world, enhancing our careers, our service to our community, our relationships, and our own self-confidence.

If you could use some more applause in your life, come see us here at Valley Easy Speakers! Our next meeting is shown on the right. Just hit the "thumbs up" button to let us know you'll attend.

Meeting Recap: August 2, 2018

We had another great meeting on August 2, including our two NEW MEMBERS! Please welcome Laura L. and Patrice, who have tranferred their memberships to VES!

Maurie brought us an interesting theme, Sleep, and Joel's Table Topics had us all telling our sleep stories!

Katherin presented an Educational Moment with good information about using Easy-Speak for club business. Our two (then) visitors (now newest members) participated as well, with Laura L. serving as our Wordmaster and Patrice as Grammarian/Ah Counter.

Two excellent speeches by Joanne and Kathy H. kept us all engaged, and two great evaluations by Laura L. and Jeanette provided great feedback for the speakers.

Our General Evaluator, Joanne, brought to light the good things about our group and our meeting, while also challenging us to keep improving.

We got some great news from our Timer, Russell, after each segment: all of our speakers qualified for the voting by staying within their time limits! Ribbons were awarded for the following:

Best Table Topics: Laura F.

Better Evaluator: Jeanette

Better Speaker: Joanne

Reminder: we'll be meeting at Grace Covenant Church for the next three meetings. Find it at 756 Peters Creek Rd. See you there!

With a few people out of town or under the weather, we had a small turnout for this meeting, but we were pleased to welcome Clint Atwater, DTM, as a visitor. Each member fulfilled multiple roles in order to produce an excellent meeting. If you missed this one, you missed something really special!

As Toastmaster, Amy did an excellent job leading our meeting with a theme of "Hobbies." Russell, as Topics Master, continued the Hobbies theme with three thought-provoking questions for the lucky participants to answer off the cuff. Katherin, Clint, and Joanne all did admirable jobs with their respective questions.

Two members presented prepared speeches. Laura's speech, a research presentation from the Pathways Presentation Mastery Level 1, shared some of the benefits of making music, especially in a group. Maurie shared her journey in establishing a social media presence, as part of her Pathways Visionary Communication Level 4.

Our evaluators, Russell and Katherin respectively, both provided helpful feedback and encouragement to our speakers, and we especially appreciated Clint, who served as our General Evaluator. An outside eye is a good thing now and then!

With two disqualifications for time (watch those lights!), voting was an easy task. Ribbons were awarded as follows:

Best Table Topics: Clint

Better Evaluator: Katherin

Better Speaker: Maurie

Our next meeting will be held at the Salem Public Library as usual on August 2, and then the next two meetings will be moved to Grace Covenant Church on Peters Creek Road. Details will be provided as the time gets closer.

See you on August 2nd!

Meeting Recap: June 21, 2018

Great food, a nice reunion with international flair, and a great Toastmasters meeting all rolled into one! This was a great experience for all.

The theme was "Retirement," honoring two long-time members who have become "alumni" of our club and paid a visit for our year-end celebration. We were also pleased to see Robert visit again.

Russell carried the theme from dinner into the meeting with many interesting facts, jokes, and audience participation throughout the meeting.

Table topics carried the theme as well, and Topics Master Katherin posed four thought-provoking questions. Table Topics speakers were Amy, Joel, Geoff, and Laura.

Joe T. and Joanne presented excellent prepared speeches, with expertly done evaluations by Robert and Joel, respectively.

The competition was fierce, but in the end, ribbons were awarded as follows:

Best Table Topics Speaker: Joel

Better Evaluator: Joel

Better Speaker: Joanne

Our meeting that would normally fall on July 5 has been cancelled due to the holiday week. See you all on July 19!
