Meeting report for 3rd July - Resilience

Jitendra Bothara was Toastmaster last night and kept good control of the meeting, with little stories to link each part of the Agenda to the next, making his TMs role more interesting. Great idea Jitendra.

Three more impressive speeches also unrolled last night –

1st  Speaker – James Sirion with “Munro’s Special”. After only 4 months a Toastmaster, James made a wonderful speech about the brilliant mechanic Bert Munro who invented the ‘world’s fastest Indian motorcycle’. James said he found out about Munro years before coming to NZ and told us that the perseverance and courage that Munro showed typifies New Zealanders as he sees us. (Make James a Kiwi now Minister of Immigration please).  James passion for Bert’s accomplishments at Bonneville Beach USA helped make his excellent speech flawless. Terrific work James. Well done.

2nd Speaker Ladi McGlinn with “The Danger of Misunderstanding", was a riot from beginning to end as she explained how easy it is for people born in other countries, to misinterpret what Kiwis say when we don’t speak as clearly as we could. Her intimate story about how she mistakenly thought her husband was saying ‘hips’ when he meant ‘heaps’ had her audience rolling in the aisles. Ladi pointed out that NZers and Australians speak a different sort of English from the way English people speak it, with special nuances and shades of meanings that new immigrants find very puzzling. Ladi brought down the house when she told how when she read in the newspapers that “All Blacks banned from tweeting” she felt so sad that racism was so rife in NZ that she started to pack her bags to go home to Nigeria. Fabulously funny speech Ladi. You had ‘em in the palms of your hands as they say about great comedians.

Our 3rd Speaker of the night was Saurabh Saxena and everybody wished him a Happy Birthday for the next day. His speech “Advanced Presentation by Design” was a very thoughtful message to all of us who might be asked to brief our bosses or clients on any subject, particularly if we are using PowerPoint as a presentation tool. He talked about keeping slides to a minimum and to not try and put too much information into graphs and charts so that your audience loses interest. He also mentioned the colour of backgrounds and fonts can be off-putting. More importantly, Saurabh advised us to design our presentations to suit the different personalities of our audience, giving as an example Introverts versus Extroverts who want information in two completely different formats. A very thoughtful speech Saurabh, that gave us all food for thought apropos how we can tailor our presentation skills to our audience from now on. A very informative and well-delivered speech Saurabh. Well done.

Table Topics Master Sasha Wang came up with a novel approach to her job last night. She started off a phone call, stopping in mid-sentence and asking the table topic speakers to pick up where she and the others left off so that the conversation ran seamlessly. A very tough ask for ‘victims’ she put the finger on but they sailed on victorious as though their difficult task was an everyday one for them.  Great idea Sasha and bravo to all who spoke so well.
