Meeting report for 5th June - Take Action

Another packed Toastmasters meeting with three more first-time welcome guests : Peter, Michelle and Shailesh.

Toastmaster for the first time was Amanda He and she carried off the role confidently as though she had done it many times before. Well done Amanda.

The first speaker of the night was Jitendra with his Icebreaker speech “ My Journey with Seismic Engineering”. He told us about an earthquake in Nepal that set off his interest in seismic engineering which culminated in his being head-hunted for a job in NZ which then led to a scholarship to Canterbury University. Jitendra is passionate about earthquake safety and if he “can save one person from being killed in a earthquake he will be a happy man”. As he said, “Earthquake safety depends on the pocket” a nice way of saying you get the earthquake safety you are prepared to pay for. Great speech Jitendra. You will have us all wanting to be seismic engineers if you don’t watch out.

The second speaker Burhan with “Effective Job Hunt Strategies”, and his well-prepared PowerPoint presentation gave all of us who might one day be looking for a new job, a masterclass in how to approach the task.  Burhan claims that “ Searching for a new job is the toughest job you’ll ever have” and there was not a Toastmaster or guest present who could disagree with that truism. He invited us to re-do our CV’s for every new job we apply for. “Make sure the position being sought matches your capabilities inventory”, he said. I have never thought of my job skills as an inventory of my capabilities – what a great way to put it. Excellent speech content Burhan.

The third speaker Carolina’s “Dare to be great” speech was a poignant reminiscence of a tough childhood from her Dutch immigrant parents. Her sister was held back one class and beat up Carolina if she did better than her sister at school. As she puts it - “Our deepest fear is that we are inadequate” and now she strives to do all the things she wanted to do when she was a child and couldn’t for fear of being judged inadequate. The picture Carolina drew of her childhood saddened those of us in the audience who had happy times free of any stress. However, it is never too late and now she “understands herself better she understands other people better – moving forward with confidence and respecting her fellowman”. Carolina suggest we if we “allow our light to shine, that will encourage other people to shine”. How very true.

Our hearts went out to Carolina and the hurt she endured. The strength she shows now to be able to talk about her past in this speech, proves that her light is shining very very brightly.  Well done Carolina. We think you are marvellous.

Richard gave us another short discussion on easy-Speak with a Q & A session. Any toastmasters not getting the emails may be using Hotmail which is a problem that has a ‘fix’ . Contact Richard to find out the answer.

Richard also advised that TOASTMASTERS OF THE WEEK DO NOT NEED TO PRINT AGENDAS anymore. Take note.

Finally, didn’t you just love Mark “Crybaby” Edmondston in his Table Topics Speech urging himself to “hand in his man badge”? That has to be an original. And guest Michelle taking her cat Simba camping on a forty-foot lead! Whatever next? I hope Simba was wearing her Hi-Viz gear in case shooters mistook her for a small but pert lion.

Wonderful meeting folks. See you all here next week.
