Meeting 14th July 2016

Word of the Day: Buzz

Theme: Super Quiz Night

Sgt@Arms: Will opened the meeting by telling us the Irish origin of the word “Quiz” was a wager made in 1791 by , Richard Daley manager of the Theatre Royal in Dublin, who bet his friends that within 48 hours he could make a nonsense word be spoken throughout Dublin — specifically, a word having no meaning nor derived from any known language Daly sent employees to write the word "QUIZ" in chalk on doors, windows, and walls throughout Dublin. This mysterious word became the talk of the town, and Daly won his bet. The word 'quiz' passed into general language.

Toastmaster: Michael facilitated the meeting's continuity by conducting a quiz in between speakers and all answers had to be prefixed by saying “Buzz”. We had a lot of fun showing off our knowledge or lack of it where esoteric questions were asked. All good fun.

Bard: Hadassah read us parts of a very old poem from Biblical times, seemingly all about a girl trying to lure a king into her clutches. Her name wasn't Camilla was it Hadassah?

1st Speaker: Chris with “Travel Plans” gave us an amusing story about planning his trip to Rarotonga without using a travel agent and the pitfalls he encountered. For example, his plan to hire motorcycles or cars were scotched when he hadn't taken his driver's licence with him. He also ran into trouble with time zone changes causing him to miss planes. Did you know there are 24 time zones in the world? We didn't. Very interesting speech Chris, and very helpful knowing what to do when planning a trip overseas. Well done.

2nd Speaker Judy with “Administrating a Questionaire: Lessons learnt”. Judy used a very cleverly constructed PowerPoint presentation to describe the difficulties she encountered when doing a questionnaire for her PhD. Obtaining student consents to asking questions was a particularly big problem and she told us how she changed her methods to solve that and similar problems. A very insightful speech Dr Judy. Great work.

3rd Speaker – Jitendra with “Why buildings dance differently”, as a seismic engineer, likened the shaking and rocking of buildings and land in an earthquake, to the gyrations of dancing – (was that break-dancing Jitendra or Cathedral Rock 'n Roll?) . Jitendra discussed at length the effect of seismic shock waves – comparing them to the ripple effect of throwing a stone in the water. A very enlightening speech Jitendra. Well done.

Tabletopicsmaster: Marlese (thank you for stepping into this role at the last minute) had some great 'quiz' related topics for speakers:

 - Hadassah - Winning “To be a millionaire' and how to spend it

- Ryan - What's the buzz?

-.Mark - Chosing a quiz category- Dr Who, The Beatles or Starwars.

Timer: Marlese multi-tasking tonight - gave us timings for all speeches given during the evening..

 President Will: Reminded us about:

-Debs' party on 23 July 2016

-Humorous Speech night coming up
