Meeting 18th September 2014  -Theme "The Number Three

                                             -Words of the Day Advice/Advise

Sgt@Arms Graeme  was “deeply hurt” that a previous speech
about Sid the Magpie attacking him was not believed by Toastmasters, so he had attached
a camera to his cycle helmet.  He produced
David Attenborough type video pictures of the latest 12 search and destroy
sorties on his hat by Sid the Feathered Exocet Missile. It was Graeme’s suggestion
that Sid would be better employed in a Vindaloo and gave us a recipe for Magpie
Curry from Your Kitchen Rules.

What a fun way to start a meeting and to
get attendees in the mood to be entertained.

Toastmaster
Leigh gave us the Number Three as the theme for the day and spoke at length
about various ‘threes’ that occur from time to time.

1st Speaker- Nic with “ The Life of a Landscaper”
detailed his life as an energetic child in the country, in particular making a
rimu bed at school carving/woodturning class. Nic claimed to be a “creative
adventurous young man” and we would have to agree with him.

  Nic
described landscaping as ‘designing anything on your section not attached to
your house” such as concreting, decks, blocks, paving, water features,
irrigation. As their standard of living increases “people want their houses to
be as stylish outside as they are inside”- and call in the landscaper.

  Hard
work gives Nic his job satisfaction and he loves to get a great finished result
for a happy client.

His work is varied, no day is the same, working outside delights him – sun
shining, birds singing and the beer after work “tastes so much better when you
have created something stunning”.

Terrific speech Nic with great sense of
humour showing through. Well done.

2nd Speaker  Jitendra – with “Seismic Assessment of
Existing Buildings: What is %NBS?”

Jitendra, a seismic engineer told us “seismic
assessment is testing the seismic capacity of an existing building against a
set of Building Standards”.

A building with a rating of 100% NBS
(National Building Standards) meets the standard that a new building is
required to meet, however, “a new building designed to standard doesn’t mean it
won’t fall down”. Not good news for the rest of us.

Although this is technically difficult subject comprehensible only to
other seismic engineers, Jitendra gave us an insight into the difficulties
engineers have to ensure that old buildings are as safe as can be and new
buildings are even safer.

Excellent PowerPoint presentation Jitendra, which enabled us amateurs to
understand in a small way, your very esoteric occupation.

  A scary
but great speech for a technical audience of other seismic engineers. Very well
done Jitendra.

3rd Speaker – Shailesh, with “Kiwis Can-Do Attitude and Asbestos” started by
detailing the 700 year history of New Zealand and our friendly can-do attitude
that converted “swamp to city” speaking about Christchurch.

Asbestos is a fibrous metal, non-flammable, and a flexible insulator.
There are 3,000 products made of asbestos from tiles to road signs. In WW1 and
WW2 all branches of the military used asbestos in the walls and ceilings of
bases, in the boiler rooms and sleeping quarters of vessels, in automobile
parts and “even in gasmasks”!

Building contractors “think they can do anything but the Kiwi attitude
cannot work all the time” said Shailesh. “Just one tiny fibre of asbestos can
cause devastating cancer of the lungs”. So the Kiwi Can-Do Attitude in dealing
with deconstructing damaged buildings that have asbestos material needs to be
re-assessed. PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) gloves, masks, boots and
overalls should be worn at all times by contractors.

  A
very interesting speech Shailesh and very appropriate in Christchurch when
buildings are being pulled down post-earthquake. Very well done presentation.
