Meeting 4th September 2014

Meeting Report 4th September 2014 –Theme – Bring a Guest Night

Lovely to see all the husbands, wives, children and friends of Toastmaster members of the Riccarton Club, coming along to see just what it is we do for two hours every Thursday night.

And great to see four more potential members –Nicola, Alannah, Marina and Mangu.

Srgt@Arms Graeme spoke about the origins of Father’s Day in America, adopted by the Western world to help shops sell more. He also introduced “Harry the Hippo” our new purple squeaky toy, that the Timer will be using to politely warn speakers that they have gone over their allotted time.

Toastmaster Saurabh was delighted to announce that he was inspired to join a Karate Club by Riccarton Club member and Black Belt - Sasha Wang. Members will probably be entertained at a later point by Sasha and Saurabh giving a joint “On the Mat” demonstration of their fighting skills. Good luck with that.

Saurabh ran a very tight ship ensuring that agenda items began and ended on time and overall his stint as Toastmaster demonstrated his first-rate leadership abilities.

1st Speaker Mark E. with “#Totally Awesome” had a practice run of the speech he has written for the Humorous Speech if Julie, who has been called up for Jury Service (oh the opportunities for future speeches that will give her) is unable to give her scheduled humorous speech. Mark is also participating in the Table Topics part of the competition so he has been and will be a busy man.

His Speech is about WETA, (the Win Election Totally Awesome) new political party he is starting up. Mark contends that Weta Workshop, the famous Peter Jackson movie studio special effects department, could ‘make Christchurch shine’ by using bewildered by the earthquake Christchurch people as extras in Zombie films and already wrecked Christchurch buildings in disaster movies. No need to build movies sets for demolition Mark claims, when Christchurch can provide anything Weta needs. Great speech Mark. You have our vote for first prize at the comps.

2nd Speaker Leigh with “This Rock” entertained us with the dance style “Ceroc” which is an abbreviation of the French phrase c'est Rock and is fusion of Salsa and Jive, but without the complicated footwork. Leigh brought her own prop Graeme to show us some of the basic 24 beginners’ steps. Ceroc dancers learn 4 steps every night until they know them all and can string the steps together. Leigh said tongue in cheek, “The man leads, the woman follows and this may be many men’s only chance to ever lead a woman”. Leigh urged us “go along and have some fun” by joining our local Ceroc dance club. Fabulous speech and demo Leigh and Graeme. You make a stunning pair on the dance floor.

3rd Speaker Ladi with “A celebration of harvest” took us to the colourful and vibrant annual “Yam Festival” in West Africa at the end of the rainy season when their staple food crop and a source of wealth is harvested amid much joy and festivity. We were surprised to learn that that West African does not have a winter. (Still being in the middle of our own winter we could only voice our green-eyed amazement of this revelation). Instead WA has a dry season and a rainy season and yams are the most important crop to be harvested. The Yam Festival is very colourful with parades and parties and prayers of thanks to the gods and ancestors.

How interesting Ladi. I will never be able to look at a kumara, the NZ version of a yam, without thinking of my ancestors. Wonderful speech Ladi.

Tabletopics Graeme was multitasking last Thursday and toting a huge bag of carpentry tools (that most probably were used by the Pharaohs to build their pyramids) for topics speakers to make up speeches about their use.  Not an easy task with some of these strange tools.

Tony, Nic, Jitendra, Nicola, Alannah, Marina and Mangu gave imaginative short speeches on the various tools they were given. Well done all of you, especially the newcomers and guests.

Timer Tony gave a rundown of the time members and guests took to give their speeches. Nobody was ‘hippo’d’ for going over time.

A well run and fun meeting which members obviously enjoyed as did the potential joiners and our honoured guests.
