Meeting 14th August 2014

Meeting 14th August 2014   - Theme Gratitude

Another terrific meeting packed with members, including Charlotte who had been to one meeting earlier on and decided to join up as a member tonight. Welcome aboard the Good Ship Sockburn Toastmasters Charlotte.

Sergeant@Arms Graeme opened proceedings as usual with military precision.

Toastmaster Julie gave us   the theme for today- Gratitude and recounted how she had recently had a column in The Press thanking EQC for being there when she needed them.

1st Speaker Mark Siguenza with “I’m with an alien” had us rocking in the aisles with laughter as he described, with the help of a few beautifully brief and to the point PowerPoint slides, how to respectfully treat a husband or wife. All the women in the audience were let into a man secret i.e. if you tell a man to do something he will always say “I’ll do it later”. How true. And the men were told a woman secret i.e. none of the good things you do for your wife are accumulated. Every day starts with a blank page waiting for Good Points. And don’t think you get more points for some things, like taking her on an overseas trip; every good deed only gets one point.

A wonderful funny speech by Mark. Clearly he is the future champion for Humorous Speaking.  I was impressed

2nd Speaker Shailesh Karmacharya with “Post disaster mental health” entertained us in a serious way with his take on how after earthquakes and other disasters our mental health is affected.  As Shailesh put it: - who else can be better than us (people of Canterbury) to answer - what happens after a large scale natural disaster such as an earthquake
- we can describe it point to point - in details
- there are generally 4 phases evolves, and these are:
----Heroic Phase
-----Honeymoon Phase
-----Disillusioned Phase
-----Reconstruction Phase
- We in Christchurch witnessed all of these phases. Currently, Christchurch is in reconstruction phase.
- Personal resilience is important to survive the post quake secondary blows - man-made stressors such insurance claims, broken homes, all of which contribute to mental health problems. A very apropos topic for us the survivors of the great quakes. Thank you Shailesh, we would have all got something to think about from your wonderful speech. Excellent work.

Table Topics given the question “What makes you grateful?” Charlotte, Will, Gail, Leigh, Lausantha and Ladi all gave great 2 minute speeches telling us the various things and people they were grateful for. Well done everybody.

REMINDER   Don’t forget we are all generously invited with partners to Leigh and Graeme’s house on Sat 23 August at 6pm, for potluck dinner. Everybody bring a plate full of ethnic food – sweet or savoury and their own drink. See ya there!
