TELUS House of Speakers boasts a diverse community of professionals with varying experiences and career aspirations. We welcome everyone who is committed to personal growth in public speaking and leadership within a supportive, social atmosphere. Join us and become a part of our vibrant club!

When do you meet?

We are currently meeting online with occasional hybrid meetings. Members are notified in advance of opportunities to come to a meeting in person. (https://meet.google.com/zot-tpey-tjz)

We meet every Thursday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. ET (no reservations necessary)

What happens at a meeting?

There are five components to our regular meetings:

1. Prelude

At the start of the meeting, our Club President and the Toastmaster (chair) of the meeting deliver opening remarks. This includes sharing a theme for the day and introducing key roles that will help us have an engaging and effective meeting.

2. Prepared Speeches

We typically have one formal speakers per week. Most of these speeches are projects within one of the educational online training manuals provided by Toastmasters International . Each project has specific objectives and helps the speaker focus on a different aspect of public speaking from gestures to voice to storytelling and beyond.

 3. Impromptu Speeches (Table Topics)

Beyond rehearsed presentations, we also want to develop our off-the-cuff speaking skills, which we do during our Table Topics sessions. A Table Topics Master will decide on a list of prompts that both members and guests will speak to for 1-2 minutes. We encourage guests to participate in this part of the meeting.

4. Evaluations

One of the cornerstones of the Toastmasters program is a focus on learning and to learn we need feedback. Each prepared speaker will receive an evaluation from a member who will share where they have succeeded and where they can do even better. We also have several members who evaluate the meeting, focusing on timing, grammar, and the overall flow of the meeting.

5. Social Networking

Before and after each meeting, you’ll often see members catching up socially. This is not a formal part of the meeting; however, we do encourage you to arrive 5-10min early so you can settle in and connect.

Note: We also hold special meetings throughout the year including speech contests, open houses, and social gatherings.

Any such events will be posted on our homepage – guests are always welcome!

How many times can I visit before becoming a member?

Guests are welcome to visit three times free of charge to make the decision about joining our club. We find that most guests tend to arrive to or three times before becoming a member to get a feel for how the meeting is run. There are also many clubs in Toronto and the GTA so if our club doesn’t work for your schedule, there’s likely another that does. You can search for clubs here.

I have more questions, who can I talk to?

All members are available to answer questions during our club meetings.

Outside of club meetings, you can send us a message by clicking on "Contact Us" in the right-hand navigation.

We look forward to seeing you!

Does the mere thought of standing up to say a few words fill you with fear?

If so, you’re not alone! Fear of public speaking is reputed to rank even higher than death! Whether it’s the upcoming wedding speech, an important pitch to a client, or simply making your point in a meeting of colleagues, it’s easy for the fear to take over – so that you don’t perform at your best. There are consequences for how you’re viewed by friends, family and your boss, with follow-on emotional and economic impacts.

So what would you like to do about it?

If you’re employed in a reasonable sized organisation, you might have already attended a presentation skills course. Whilst good, you might have found that the learning wore off quickly and you’re still not that much further forward. If you really want to tackle your fear, and also if you’ve not got access to in-house training, Toastmasters is the perfect answer.

Our wide network of clubs and their learn-by-doing programme are sure to help you become a better speaker and leader because you’ll be building your skills at a pace that you choose. And the regular meetings (typically twice per month) ensure you practice and develop your skills – just as you might build your muscles through regular exercise (well some of you might!).

Here are just some of the benefits of joining Toastmasters:

  • Regular and constructive feedback from other learners as you practice organising your thoughts and presenting them clearly
  • Access to a wealth of educational materials and resources on public speaking, listening skills and effective communication in conferences and meetings.
  • A free subscription to the Toastmaster, a monthly magazine that provides insights on communication, leadership, club activities and other relevant topics.

Members quickly gain the skills that allow them to excel at job interviews, present humorous, informative or special occasion speeches or give powerful business presentations.

Come along to our next meeting to find out more and see it in action. Guests are most welcome and can come as many times as they like.

Everyone in a Toastmasters meeting was once at the level you are now. The environment is friendly and supportive, and the self-paced programme allows you to build confidence with each speaking assignment.

  • A typical club has between 20 to 40 members who meet either weekly, biweekly or monthly. An evening meeting normally lasts around 90- 120 minutes.
  • There is no instructor in a Toastmasters meeting. Instead, members evaluate one another’s presentations, pointing out the strengths and suggesting improvements. This feedback process is a key part of the program’s success. Members also give impromptu talks on assigned topics, conduct meetings and develop their leadership skills.
  • We learn through the Toastmasters Pathways learning experience, an exciting, flexible and interactive way to develop your skills and help others in your club develop theirs. Pathways helps you learn communication and leadership skills that you need to succeed. It gives you:

    • The opportunity to build  up to 300 unique competencies
    • 10 specialized learning paths to choose from
    • Online content, so that you can learn anytime, anywhere
    • Real-world, transferable skills

One thing that you'll love at Toastmasters meetings is the applause. At first you'll be applauded for your effort; later you'll be applauded for your skill.

The Toastmasters Mission
A statement of shared values

Every Toastmasters club shares the same mission, clearly defined in the following mission statement:

We provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth.

Through this mission, each Toastmaster gains a clear understanding of the club's purpose, and the organization as a whole benefits from a shared set of values and goals.
